it's days like these that keep me on my winning streak

My mom called me at work today to ask if I wanted her to bring me lunch (like the answer to that is ever going to be no?) because she had to stop by and pick some things up. And when she got to the store, she was talking to our manager and happened to casually mention that they have a new dog. Ummm, EXCUSE ME? I knew they had been contemplating getting this dog, but the last I'd heard it was still under consideration. But he arrived last night and no one bothered to tell me. Uhhh, thanks?

The dog kind of has a long story. My cousin goes to school in Rapid City and volunteers at a shelter. They found this lab wandering on the street with no collar and no chip. They usually only keep dogs for 5 days but he was so well-behaved and totally trained that they kept him for 10 but no one claimed him. My cousin called my uncle crying about how they were going to put the dog down and he was so good and couldn't they keep him? Except that they already have two of her dogs there. But my uncle said he'd arrange something and she brought the dog home at Thanksgiving. One of the family friends took him as a hunting dog. Except the poor thing is HORRIBLY gun shy, as they found out. So my uncle took him back and was contemplating keeping him but their little rat dog was already very territorial after the new puppy they got a few months ago. My uncle begged my mom to take him and my parents were going to think about it. Of course, my dad loved him immediately and now the dog's name is Fred. idek

He really is very sweet and well trained. Except that he barks a lot for attention and that's going to have to stop. They think he's around 1 1/2 or 2, so he's still a bit of a puppy. Hopefully he'll mellow out a little bit. My mom says this is just a trial period, but I'm pretty sure the dog is here to stay. So yay! New doggie!

Yesterday, my brother was at my parents house when I got there and I asked him if he was going to come over today to see the new dog. He said he wasn't sure and that he'd heard she was a midget Riley. I told that to my sister, she loved it and the name's kind of stuck.

So, introducing Midge! (uhh, we think - it might change yet, I guess) ETA: Already changed to Annie. We'll see if that sticks.

So yeah, she's pretty adorable. And so tiny for a Scottie! She's a little hard of hearing and has cataracts, but otherwise she's in good health. She LOVES to eat. In fact, we were already calling her Midge the Mooch because she wouldn't stop begging around the table and following people around the kitchen. I was the one giving her treats because I was trying to get her to learn how to use the doggie door, so she stuck close to me a lot of the night and all through dinner.

She & Earl mostly ignored each other. I think they'll be okay. But she's tiny enough to fit under the bed and that's always been only Earl's territory. I don't think he'll be okay with sharing with her. We'll see.

The first family also got a new dog this weekend! The only thing I ever liked about Dubya was his awesome dog Barney. But this one is pretty cute too.

In other news!
We had a little meeting of the minds last night and came up with a plan for CONvergence. We're going out dressed up as a group for the Saturday night parties and everyone is welcome to join us! We'll be doing the Zombie Pirate Pub Crawl Cabana Shamble. Brilliant, eh? I can't wait to start getting my costume together! Aaarrrrrrrrrrbrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaains! By a unanimous vote of arrrrrrrrrrrrs, I'll be heading up this yet-nameless ship of Zombie Pirates as Captain Legend, I suppose. It's going to be so much fun!

Henry joined us last night since he'll also be attending CONvergence for the first time this year. He took a real shining to wilowisp. He still mostly just stares at me. In fact, he would look around the group and be giving everyone a huge smile and then completely drop it he when he looked my way. =/ I swear, I've never pinched him or anything.

I'm not sure if I mentioned that I'd be doing it, but I'm dog sitting for my parents while they're in Phoenix to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday. Earl was already depressed since Riley is gone and now he's pretty much comatose since he misses my mom. I made the mistake of driving her car when I went out last night and he went batshit when I came home because he thought it was her. I always forget he can recognize the sound of her car. He's really not going to be happy that she's not coming home for two more days yet, but we'll make it through somehow.

Okay, have all of these commercials pretty much sucked or what? I think I'm going to give up and put Torchwood on instead.

Also? A few weeks ago we found a mouse in my parents house. And now I can occasionally hear it chewing away at something underneath a small cabinet in their living room. I have a feeling it's trapped or something. I think my dad said he put a glue trap under there. However, I ain't checking. Mouse chasing doesn't fall under the dog sitting job description. At all.
