My friend thanked me for the 'amazing review' I wrote and told me it was perfect. Hooray! I was successful in writing some bs. I still super suck at writing reviews.

PS. I did end up legit enjoying the book. It just needs some work, IMHO.

My brother is getting married on Saturday and I won't be there. I feel a little guilty about that, but my freaking birthday party is happening that day. I kind of have to be there. And honestly, if he was really concerned that I be there, he would have asked about days that work. It's not actually about me, of course. It just sucks that I can't be there. Of course, he also scheduled it when my mom will be in Phoenix, so she won't be there either.

People probably think I'm like mean or something that I won't reschedule my party. But it's really an impromptu wedding just to get his fiancée's immigration paperwork started, because her work visa ends in November. And you know, she'll need a green card so she doesn't have to go back to Columbia. They're going to have a real ceremony & reception in January so it's not like I'll be missing that. I'm not heartless. I just want to have my birthday party.

Did you know I still read you? I do! Almost everyday. Crazy, I know. I should start posting again, but I never feel like I have much to say. Work exists. Going out happens, sometimes. I read a lot. I mean, A LOT. My niece is super adorable. I miss my dog since he moved 2 1/2 hours north with my parents and I can't talk to him on the phone. My newish fandom (CockyBoys - google that at your own risk, totally NSFW) is the most ridiculous thing I've ever participated in and that's saying something. (there's no fourth wall and it's very concerning, but also fun) I almost never listen to music anymore but have more podcasts downloaded than I have time for.

Annnnnnnnnnnnd, that's about it? I'm a boring old lady, I guess.

Friday Fiver: Bookworm

1. What was the last book you read?
I just finished Josh Lanyon's Adrien English Mysteries series. It was enjoyable, even if the cop boyfriend of the narrator was a giant asshole douchebag for most of the series. That's kind of par for the course in Josh Lanyon's books so it's not like it was unexpected.

2. What book(s) are you reading now?
I don't know yet. I just went through a spree of reading gay cops/detectives, so it's probably time for something different. Maybe some gay cowboys. ;) But I'm also way behind on my historical romance reading, so I might read the new Nicole Jordan book this weekend too.

I'm reading SOOOOO much thanks to my kindle. I've already read over 30 books/novellas for the year. That's a lot for me, since my free time is usually taken up with other things. But I've bought a ton of books since Christmas and I'm trying to work my way through them.

3. Do you have a library card? Do you use it?
Uhhhhh, somewhere in a drawer I do indeed have a library card. But I haven't stepped into a library in over 10 years. I like to own things way too much. Reading a book and then giving it back is kind of a weird concept for me.

4. How do you choose a new book to read?
Yeah, not gonna lie, the cover has to be eye-catching. Or at least not repulsive. But the book also has to be something I'm vaguely interested in. And I have a list of writers that are always a must buy. I also read a bunch of book blogs, get recs from friends and haunt the Recommended for You sections on Amazon.

But when I'm specifically choosing what to read, it's usually what I'm in the mood for. Which really could be anything.

5. We all had to read books in school. Which was your favorite? Your least favorite? Do you think you would feel differently about them if you read them now?
Did I have a favorite book from school reading? I really can't say that I do. Oh wait. I think we read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein for class and I do enjoy that book quite a bit. I re-read it a few years ago and still enjoyed it.

My least favorite was definitely Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Thankfully, I was able to stop reading it about halfway through. It was dreadfully long and boring. Can't say that I think that would change if I read it now. Actually, you couldn't make me read it, even at gun point.
leighblack: (DW - You Watch Us Run)
Remember me? I used to post here. Yeah, I know. But OE is pretty much over now and I have actual free time again. It's a weird thing.

I got a Kindle for Xmess! I'm more in love with it than I thought I would be. It's named Melody (for Melody Pond, yo) and it's got a sweet cover. And it's chock full of all kinds of things that I love to read, because I have spent an embarrassing amount of money on books already. Like $300+. Sheesh.

I've been trying to pick my stitching project back up and that's sort of been successful. I should remember to take an update photo tonight. Although it still doesn't actually look like anything...

Sherlock, you guys. Best thing ever on TV or best thing EVAR on TV? That Cumberbatch fella is headed for great things. (like the Star Trek movie!!)

My hands are so cold at my desk that I can barely get my phone to respond. Maybe I need to get a pair of those capacitive touch gloves just to wear at work? That's kind of sad.

Six weeks from now we'll be in New Orleans and getting ready to sail away on The Rock Boat. I'm super excited about it! I really should work on adding more stuff to my TRB XII playlist. Of course, then I would have to stop listening to podcasts long enough to listen to some music.

Speaking of that, watching the footage of the capsized cruise ship in Italy makes me sad and ridiculously angry.

And thus concludes the Readers Digest of Things That are currently going on in my life.
leighblack: (Hobbies - Reading is Love)
Yeah, yeah. I know. I don't have time to post much anymore. Maybe that will change soon? Who knows?

How about a book recommendation? I was intrigued by this book review on Book Binge so I bought Cut & Run by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux on Saturday. I read and loved it so much that I immediately bought the next three books in the series, of which I've already read the second and am about halfway through the third. A m/m romance thriller with two totally hot FBI agents? Yes please!

Also for your reading pleasure, how about a STXI/X-Men: First Class crossover? A Town Without Pity by [livejournal.com profile] seanchaidh. It's awesome!
leighblack: (Hobbies - Reading is Love)
I'm totally failing at updating. I just don't have any free time! =/

Okay, how about this? Kind of as a joke, my book club decided to read Flowers in the Attic. Because it seems to be a thing that's true for pretty much every woman of our generation that we all read that book, at an age that was probably inappropriate to read it. And after a month I finally finished it yesterday! Yay! It's done!

To be honest, it's not the worst book I've ever read. I can totally see why the me that was reading Dean Koontz and Mary Higgins Clarke and Elizabeth Peters loved V.C. Andrews too. She totally fits in that genre - books that are kind of thrilling but are really easy to read and follow. aka, books for the masses. And I did love V.C. Andrews. Looking through descriptions on wiki, I've read the Dollanganger series, the Casteel series, the Cutler series, the Landry series and the Logan series. That's a lot of crappy books. Of course, I had plenty of free time as a teen and a library card.

Re-reading it was...fine. It's not a book (or a genre) I'd pick up now. But it's certainly not as horrible as I want to imagine it was. It has the subtle foreshadowing of a 2x4 to the head and the squicky stuff is really over quite quickly. I'm pretty sure that it gets worse as the series continues though. I don't know. I'm glad that we read it, but I certainly won't be re-reading the entire series.

But now I don't know what to read! There's been a look of good books released lately and I don't know where to begin! I have Cherie Priest's Dreadnought and Gail Carriger's Blameless. And Teresa Medeiros' The Devil Wears Plad and Sabrina Jeffries'A Hellion in Her Bed and Jade Lee's Wicked Surrender. And Liz Carlyle's One Touch of Scandal and Elizabeth Boyle's Mad About the Duke both come out tomorrow. That's not even a fraction of the books I have sitting here. I need to take a month off just to read. Ha ha. Not likely!

Enough about that. Time for me to get back to fanmixing. Which is a post for another day!
leighblack: (Me - Reading is Love)
Day 14 → A non-fictional book

More book talk today! I think my choice for this is Dan Savage's The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage and My Family. Because I love Dan Savage a whole lot. This book is the tale of his quest to marry his boyfriend Terry in Canada. And it's super cute and smart and funny!

a non-fictional book??
leighblack: (Me - Reading is Love)
Day 13 → A fictional book

Uhhhh...I have no idea what to post here. I just haven't been reading as much as I normally do. Well, okay. Here's the book I'm currently reading: Soulless by Gail Carriger. We're reading it for our book club and it's very entertaining so far! It's a steampunk-y paranormal historical romance, I suppose. Lots of interesting characters and it moves very fast. I recommend it!

I made this same post for 2008 and actually kept up with it, so I'll be doing it again for 2009. It's helped me keep track of what I've done over the year!

The 2009 Meme...

leighblack: (Cobra - Gabe is a Little Crazy)
I'm not interested in filling out that typical year-end meme that's floating around. Instead I'll do this one, partly stolen from [livejournal.com profile] seimaisin and partly from my own brain.

my list of concerts attended in 2008 )

also, my top 10 concerts of the year )

some meme questions:
Band(s) seen the most: Cobra Starhip, We the Kings and Every Avenue - 3 times each

Biggest show night: For sheer number of fans, definitely NKOTB. Which just reminded me why I hate arena shows. For anticipation, well...waiting 4 years to see Kasey Chambers again is kind of hard to beat.

Smallest show: Probably Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles. There were definitely less than 50 people in the Entry. Maybe less than 30. Shame really since the show was so fantastic!

Band(s) you never want to see again: Ayria. Oh gods, never again. She opened up for The Cruxshadows. It was just her, a keyboard/computer player and a dude on an electronic drum kit. And she ran around like Goth Barbie. Even though she was really loud, I actually fell asleep for a while. Because she played for an ETERNITY. Also, Metro Station. WHY ARE THEY SO POPULAR??

Band(s) you didn't really know going in and came out loving: Graham Colton, Hayes Carll, Matt Wertz, Brokencyde (ha ha!), A Verse Unsung

I meant to get all my photos and videos from all these shows that have been sitting on my computer for months posted before I made this post. But yeah, that didn't happen obviously. =/

I'm also trying to get 65 books read for the year. I'm at 63 right now. Can I do 2 books in 3 days? Sure. Will I actually have the free time though? That's the real question.
leighblack: (JB - Thinking...)
Sometimes you just have to love this crazy state. Yesterday is was the nicest day of the year. 52 degrees, sunny, gorgeous. Today? 7-8 inches of heavy snow are expected. Sven apologized many many times during the news broadcast yesterday. Certainly, I'm not looking forward to the snow, but I am amused by how ridiculous it all is. What else can I do?

I was pretty productive this weekend! I got almost all my stuff done that needed to be done. Which is good, because this is my schedule for the next week:
Today - work/Hotel Cafe concert (yay! Cary Brothers!)
Tues - work/Hallmark
Wed - work/Hallmark
Thurs - work/get supplies for Torchwood party
Fri - work/Torchwood final episode party!!
Sat - Hallmark/pow wow with [livejournal.com profile] seimaisin/Emerson Hart concert/Doctor Who premiere!
Sun - Hallmark

The weekend after that, I'll be in Mason City on Sat and then back here for The Audition concert on Sun. And the weekend after that I'll be in Detroit! Who needs free time?

Also, apparently it's just going to be normal that every couple Sunday nights I get less than an hour of sleep. Because I think I finally fell asleep around 4:30am. My alarm goes off at 5:15am. *groans*

I listened to some music this week! Here's my last.fm stats, in which I was perhaps angry while I was at work )

My official books read total for the first quarter of the year is 25! Go me!
leighblack: (TW - Asking Me Out on a Date?)
I know I've complained about this before. But why oh why do customers insist on telling me how beautiful and gorgeous it is outside when I'm clearly stuck indoors all day?? Yeah, I fucking know that already. But I'm stuck serving you assholes so I won't get to enjoy any bit of it. Ugh. =/

Okay, I can't let my journal be all negative all the time. Something positive...Oh! I've already read seven books this month and am in the middle of two others. So that will be nine or possibly even ten books read this month. I'd say that's pretty good.

Oh hey! There's a midnight screening of Serenity on Saturday night! With all the crap going on last week, I almost forgot about it. Also? I have Friday, Saturday and Sunday off from both jobs. That's something of a miracle!

And the Cobra Starship show is on Thursday. And the free Shawn Mullins show is tomorrow. The week is already much improved!

Here, have some last.fm stats: one of these weeks I'm going to listen to something besides John Barrowman )
leighblack: (Cobra - Gabe Loves NKOTB)
I stole this from [livejournal.com profile] penumbren, who stole it from someone else. I'm backdating back to the 1st so I remember where the hell I posted it, as I'm going to try to remember to add to it.

I have today and tomorrow off from the day job and they did not call me once yet today. Hooray! I am scared to check my email, though. Unfortunately, I do have to work at Hallmark tonight. Which means that I'll miss the first airing of the I Love New York 2 finale. *grumble*

I finished my Christmas shopping today! Well, I do have to get a couple little gift cards yet, but that's not any hassle. I also have more junk food and supplies than will ever, ever be needed for our holiday party tomorrow night. And the Secret Project is washed and ready to be ironed before I wrap it up. Yay me!

My Mom made me go to Borders with her yesterday. (yeah, made me! that's the story I'm sticking with) So I have more books to add to my list of books I've bought in 2007:
#121 Swimming Without a Net - MaryJanice Davidson
#122 Her Secret Fantasy - Gaelen Foley
#123 For a Few Demons More - Kim Harrison
#124 Holy Smokes - Katie MacAlister
#125 Light Before Day - Christopher Rice
#126 My Boring-Ass Life - Kevin Smith
#127 Body Electric - Susan Squires
#128 One With the Shadows - Susan Squires (yes!! can't wait to start reading it!)
#129 Kitty and the Silver Bullet - Carrie Vaughn

Sheesh! Hopefully that's the end of the list for the year. We'll see. Next year I do believe I'll make a list of all the DVDs I purchase instead. 'Cause that's a pretty big list too.
leighblack: (TheOffice - Vampire!Creed)
While I was cleaning my living room, I realized that I hadn't added these books to my list of books bought in 2007:
#115 Tombs of Endearment - Casey Daniels
#116 The Queen's Lady - Shannon Drake
#117 Pirate's Promise - Bobbi Smith
#118 A Lion's Tale - Chris Jericho

I pretty much have my list of things to do this weekend complete. More than I thought I'd get done anyways. I'm happy with it I guess.
leighblack: (Me - Reading is Love)
I stopped by Borders tonight, so I have books to add to my list of books bought in 2007:
#112 A Woman Scorned - Liz Carlyle
#113 Slam - Nick Hornby
#114 Serenity Found - edited by Jane Espenson

*sigh* I'm failing miserably at my quest to read two books a week for the rest of the year. I just don't have enough free time. Damn.

I have work I brought home that I should be doing right now. Of course, I haven't even looked at it. =/

I should know better than to run to Borders for one book.

Books bought in 2007:
#105 A Deal With the Devil - Liz Carlyle
#106 The Devil to Pay - Liz Carlyle
#107 Mine Till Midnight - Lisa Kleypas
#108 Sin and Scandal in England - Melody Thomas
#109 Lover Unbound - J.R. Ward
#110 No Rest for the Witches - anthology
#111 Many Bloody Returns - anthology
leighblack: (TW - Gwen Said Tool)
How did I not notice this before? One of my YouTube videos is posted on The Fuchsia Band's MySpace. That's kind of cool. I like finding my stuff in random places.

I was hunting through the piles of clothing on my bedroom floor for a particular sweater this morning. All I could hear in my head was that damn "If you feel chilly, here take my sweater" song from the Old Navy commercial. And now it's been on repeat in my brain all day. DO NOT WANT.

Guys, I TURNED OFF the TV for a while last night. I also did the same on Monday night. I'm really trying to reach my goal of reading 75 books this year, and have realized that I'll need to read at least 2 books a week for the rest of the year to do it. This will not happen if I watch Law & Order all night every night. I'm doing okay so far. I finished two books I had been reading at the same time on Monday and I'm already halfway through another book. I can normally get 150-200 pages read while I'm at Hallmark, but I've been busy working on stuff lately. It's cutting into my reading time! Stupid work.

I've been to 22 concerts so far this year. Not too bad, I guess. I only went to 21 concerts total in '06. This is what my calendar looks like for the rest of the year, so far:
10/05/07 - Matt Nathanson, Cary Brothers & Kate Voegele at the Fine Line
10/06/07 - Shooter Jennings & Jason Brown in Clear Lake Iowa
10/11/07 - Stephen Kellogg and The Sixers & Tyrone Wells at the Varsity Lounge
10/17/07 - Josh Ritter & Eric Bachmann at The Cedar
10/26/07 - Shooter Jennings & Eddie Spaghetti at The Cabooze
11/03/07 - L.A. Guns in the middle of nowhere in western Minnesota
11/11/07 - Dropkick Murphys at Myth (I suppose we should organize some sort of ticket buying, huh?)
11/16/07 - Boys Like Girls, All Time Low, The Audition & Valencia at Northrop Auditorium (IF THE TICKETS EVAR GO ON SALE!)
11/27/21 - Fall Out Boy, Plain White T's, Gym Class Heroes & Cute is What We Aim For in Cedar Rapids Iowa
11/24/07 - Motion City Soundtrack, Mae, Anberlin & Metro Station at Myth

*sigh* TWO trips to Iowa. What's wrong with me?
leighblack: (Me - Reading is Love)
I went to the Sprawl of America today to pickup a present. Not for myself. But then I stopped by Barnes & Noble and...well, I have books to add to my list of books bought in 2007. I got one of these for my birthday a couple week ago, but hadn't added it to my list yet.

#100 Secrets of a Proper Lady - Victoria Alexander
#101 To Scotland, With Love - Karen Hawkins
#102 Ain't Myth-Behaving - Katie MacAlister
#103 Enslaved - Hope Tarr
#104 What is Goth? - Voltaire

I did also buy a couple gifts for someone else. And a pretzel. And Lindt truffles so I could flirt with the adorable gay boy that works there. ;)

OMG YOU GUYS! The Office premiere is in 28 minutes!!
leighblack: (Me - Reading is Love)
I've been to the bookstore twice in the last week. I obviously have books to add to my "Books Bought in 2007" list:
#96 Sex and the Psychic Witch - Annette Blair
#97 The Royal Mess - MaryJanice Davidson
#98 Forbidden Fantasy - Cheryl Holt
#99 Anita Blake Vampire Hunter: Volume 1 (graphic novel) - Laurell K. Hamilton

Note to self: Remember to go buy a loaf of flatbread, garlic spread & Texas-size rolls after work tomorrow.

I have a LOT of food planned for Sunday. You guys better come hungry!

Riley hasn't been eating the past two days. I feel so bad for my baby. I don't know what I can do to help him feel better. I laid next to him and rubbed his belly for a while tonight.
