Okay, I promise to make this shorter than my normal concert recaps. Mostly because I don't have a lot of free time.
The show itself was awesome. The Surf Ballroom is one of my favorite venues to see shows. It's big and open and the sound is great. Plus, it's been open for almost 60 years and is packed full of history. After an amusing drive through itsy-bitsy Clear Lake, we got to the Surf and the parking lot was packed. Jaime (
seimaisin) and I feared that we'd be stuck in the back, but apparently everyone had just gotten there early to start drinking. We easily walked up to the front and ended up about two people back from the stage. And they were mostly short people, so I had no problems seeing. =)
The Bottle Rockets opened the show. I've heard of them before, but never heard any of their music. I ended up really enjoying their set though. Then it was some local radio station's birthday and they threw approximately 800 T-shirts into the crowd, nearly starting a stampede. All of a sudden there were just tons of objects flying through the air and hundreds of people trying to rush up to get them. Not very well planned out.
Shooter and the band finally came on and it was a really, really great show. He has a certain magnetism on stage and I can definitely see why people follow them all around on tour. If you're not familiar with his music, I would call it rock-infused-country. With an Americana edge, perhaps. Anyhow, it's not Toby Keith (thank God) but actual good music. They played a couple Waylon Jennings songs, of course, and I was pretty happy with the set list. I was definitely glad that we drove down for the show and I'll certainly see him again!

Seriously. Sexy.

*awwwwww*
Can we talk about the crowd? Because a couple people really tried to ruin my whole experience. Things were fine when we first got there. There was an enitre family in front of us and they were all very nice. But midway through the Bottle Rockets set a group of very annoying, drunk college kids got behind us. And it was very obvious that they wanted to get in front of us. They talked loudly all through the Bottle Rockets and were pushing and shoving when there was no reason to be. The blond chick then spent most of the night screeching and yelling during the show for no obvious reason.
There was a short little chick behind me (yes, she was shorter than me) who was definitely the worst problem. She really, really wanted to be in front and that just wasn't happening. So she decided togetascloseaspossible to both Jaime and I. Seriously, it was like she was leaning against us. I looked around and the rest of the crowd really wasn't packed in that tightly, so there was no reason for it. Then she started messing with me as I tried to take photos. Oh no, bitch. It was on. There was shoving and name calling. I jabbed my elbow back as far as possible directly into her chest and left it there. And I moved around to block her view so she couldn't see. Childish? Whatever. I was seriously annoyed. And it wasn't just me. Everyone around us pretty much wanted to kick her ass.
It ended up okay though because some people at the front left and the guy next to us let me move up to the stage. He was a little odd, but there was no more shoving so I was okay with it.
