I made this same post for 2008, 2009 and 2010. Seems like I should keep it going for 2011! It's helped me keep track of what I've done over the year!

leighblack: (Trek - Spock Has HAD IT With These MF Ki)
I have spent pretty much my entire day reading fic and watching videos of a...questionable nature. Merry Christmas to me, indeed. Except for the part where my brain decided I needed to be up at 6am this morning, no matter how many times I told it to go back to bed. Which is why I was at the grocery store at 8am, storing up for the upcoming Snowpocalypse so I don't have to kill & eat my neighbors. Also, it's very strange when the local media uses the word Snowpocalypse as though it's legitimate. Oh, twitter. You really are everywhere. ANYWAYS...

Day 23 → A YouTube video

I actually have two videos to share! (okay, technically the first one is a vimeo video, since YouTube claimed copyright infringement) And yes, they're both Star Trek related. Yeah, I know. I'm obsessed. But these are both Kirk/Spock and you all know that I am so NOT a Kirk/Spock girl. These vids just make me laugh and laugh and they need to be shared.

First! These two crazy girls on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek spent two months editing pieces of the ST audiobook to create a vid that make it looks like Zachary Quinto is narrating a story about Kirk & Spock gettin' it on while on the bridge of the Enterprise. it's freaking brilliant! )

And the second video is a re-imagining of what Kirk really saw when Spock Prime performed the mind meld with him on Delta Vega. This is especially hilarious to me now that I've been watching TOS. A warning! The fucking song playing the video will probably get stuck in your head for days. But it's worth it! it's all coming back to me... )

So there you go! And now off to my last Hallmark shift until next Monday! *swoon*
leighblack: (Me - Reading is Love)
Day 14 → A non-fictional book

More book talk today! I think my choice for this is Dan Savage's The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage and My Family. Because I love Dan Savage a whole lot. This book is the tale of his quest to marry his boyfriend Terry in Canada. And it's super cute and smart and funny!

a non-fictional book??
leighblack: (Me - Reading is Love)
Day 13 → A fictional book

Uhhhh...I have no idea what to post here. I just haven't been reading as much as I normally do. Well, okay. Here's the book I'm currently reading: Soulless by Gail Carriger. We're reading it for our book club and it's very entertaining so far! It's a steampunk-y paranormal historical romance, I suppose. Lots of interesting characters and it moves very fast. I recommend it!
leighblack: (Trek - Hide and Worf)
Day 12 → Whatever tickles your fancy

Klingon Language Institute - The fastest growing language in the galaxy!

Because they mentioned it at A Klingon Christmas Carol tonight (which was AWESOMELY FABULOUS,btw!) and I want to make sure I remember it.
leighblack: (Me - Camera Whore)
Day 09 → A photo you took

Day 1 - Lido Deck

29 DAYS
leighblack: (Riley - Big Ears)
Day 08 → A photo that makes you angry/sad

my riley

I've been thinking about Riley a lot lately and how much I wish he was still around. It's been almost two years now and I still miss him everyday. =(
leighblack: (Butch - Rocking Out)
Day 07 → A photo that makes you happy

Hmmmm. I don't want to be completely predictable and post another Karl Urban photo. Although he does make me very happy. So let's go with this one instead. It's tiny, I know. But it's the best I can do here at work.

Let's go over all the things that I love about this photo:
1) jean shortalls with the straps hanging down
2) spandex capri pants
3) another pair of spandex capri pants, under jean shorts
4) leather jacket with no shirt
5) the fact that I vividly remember this photo hanging up in my bedroom

And that's all, right? Can't be anything else that's amusing about this. Oh wait...

6) THE DUDE IN THE TOP HAT AND DIRTY SANCHEZ MOUSTACHE IS BUTCH WALKER

Ha ha ha ha ha!! Poor Butch. I know he hates this stuff, but seriously. I still love Southgang. Kind of a lot. And I make no apologies for it.
leighblack: (Hicks - Just a Ride)
Day 05 → Your favourite quote

I've posted this Bill Hicks quote before, but it's certainly worth posting again. This philosophy is something I think about every single day and I strive towards living my life under it. Maybe someday I'll be able to achieve that.

The world is like a ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think that it's real, because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly coloured, and it's very loud and it's fun for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us. They say "Hey! Don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride." And we... kill those people. Ha ha ha. "Shut him up! We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and family. This just has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn't matter because it's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourselves off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here's what you can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defense each year and instead spend it feeding, clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, for ever, in peace.
leighblack: (L&O - Goren & Eames)
Day 03 → Your favourite television program

Even though I'm kind of a TV whore, this is a completely easy question for me. Homicide: Life on the Street told the tale of a Baltimore Homicide unit and the challenges they faced working in a city with one of the highest homicide rates in the US. But it was much more than that. The characters were highly realistic and the writing was top notch. The creators went on to work on The Wire, which is regarded as one of the best television shows ever, so you know that it was some quality programming.

I didn't actually start watching until around season 3, but it didn't take much to get me hooked. Andre Braugher's Frank Pembleton will do that do you, although Kyle Secor's Tim Bayliss eventually became my favorite character. I began to religiously watch every week, even through the not quite so stellar sixth & seventh seasons. I own the deluxe complete box set with all 7 seasons, the TV movie and the L&O cross-over episodes and I've watched all of them multiple times.

Also, this is where John Munch's character started and who doesn't love him? He's still my favorite part of SVU!
leighblack: (Karl Urban - Smoking Hot)
Day 02 → Your favourite movie

Now, see? This one is much easier than yesterday. Stupid meme.

My choice for this is Se7en, David Fincher's brilliant crime thriller starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. Not a cheerful or uplifting movie by any means. It's gritty and harsh and fairly unforgiving. I can still remember sitting in the theater the first time I saw it being completely blown away by the ending. It's still hard to believe that Fincher was able to get away with it. I've re-watched this movie many many times and while it will never again have the same jolt as the first viewing, it's still very visually captivating and gripping.

If you're at all curious, my top 5 movies of all time are:
Se7en
Reservoir Dogs
The Boondock Saints
Desperado
Star Trek
Yes, 4 out of 5 are incredibly violent. I'm not sure what that says about me.

I gave in to the five things meme going around.

Comment to this post and I will give you five subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

From [livejournal.com profile] duckduck:
1. Hair bands
So, in 5th grade my favorite band in the world was The Monkees. Then I discovered Poison and my life pretty much changed forever. ;) They were my favorite band in the world until I discovered Skid Row, who were my favorite band until I found Faster Pussycat. I can remember sitting on the floor in the basement of my parents house, waiting with eager anticipation for the "I Remember You" video to premiere on MTV. And sneaking out of the house when I was 16 to see the Faster Pussycat/Blackboard Jungle show at the Mirage. I still love my hair bands. (I'd better, since I now have a Faster tattoo on my chest) I don't go to as many hair band shows as I did five years ago, but I did see Skid Row last year and they still rocked as hard as ever. =)

2. Chicago
The only place I could see myself living if I decided to leave Minnesota. I love visiting! There was a summer where I was in Chicago almost every other weekend. I have lots of friends there, I've seen lots of shows there and I don't even mind the traffic much. I'll be there in May for the Fall Out Boy show and in June for John Barrowman's TorchSong convention. Can't wait!

3. Lebanon
My mother's family is Lebanese. The whole family. I grew up going to a Lebanese Maronite Catholic church. Unfortunately, my grandpa didn't talk about the old country much before he passed away and my grandma never actually lived there, so I don't know much about Lebanon itself. I would like to visit there one day though. And I really would like to learn to speak Arabic. It's one of those goals I have.

4. Wicked
I don't even remember how I got into the Wicked musical. It probably had something to do with Idina starring in it, since I love her. There is something about the show and the music and Elphaba specifically that I totally relate to and emphasize with. The first time I saw it live (in Chicago, actually) I was crying and shaking uncontrollably all during "Defy Gravity". No musical has meant so much to me since RENT.

(a note, I do also love the book, but the musical is what really has my heart)

5. Curly hair
I have some intensely curly hair. When I was growing up, I had no idea how to take care of it and it was a frizzy, disgusting mess. I like to think I've moved on from that and learned a thing or two about what to do with my hair. It involves lots of conditioner and never using a comb or brush. I must be doing something right because people seem to have problems with resisting the urge to play with it.
