Friday morning...

leighblackI'm having a bit of a hard time today. Last night, I sat and watched the disaster coverage for hours. It was good to see Anderson Cooper go after Senator Landrieu and Paula Zahn pretty much ask FEMA Director Mike Brown "WTF??" But it's still just heartwrenching to see the plight of people in OUR OWN fucking country. I couldn't handle the tales of families being ripped apart, children missing, rapes of children by roving gangs, rats chewing on corpses in the streets of Mississippi any more and I finally shut it off. Then I couldn't sleep for what seemed like hours. I just kept seeing images in my head. I'm going to try to avoid the political ranting right now. There WILL be a time for that later, because people are going to have to be held accountable.
But, as some of you have kindly already noted, today is my 29th birthday. I don't feel very celebratory at all. But, the fact is still that I am leaving town after work and I'll be Up North with my family until Tuesday night. We will be going out somewhere nice for dinner. I'll probably end up with some more gifts, although my Motley Crue tickets were my actual bday present. And I have to figure out how not to feel guilty about it all, because right now I really do. I'm really freaked out that I'll be cut off from the Internet and the real news of what's going on for four days. I don't want to spend my vacation inside watching CNN, trying to find out what's happening, but I have a feeling that I still will be. I know some of you don't follow the news and haven't been following what's been going on, but that's not how I am. I NEED to know. There are brief glimpses of happiness. My boss came over about an hour ago to show off the nachos she specially prepared for my bday, since I had sort of requested them last time we had bday cake. I believe we're also having a cake too. She also told me that she hoped I wouldn't be working all day, which I'm taking to mean that I got the blessing to leave early. I'm okay with that. The earlier I can get on the road, the less holiday traffic I have to deal with. I kind of just want to get up there and curl up in the peaceful quiet with my dog. I know it will make me feel better.
Oh, and I want to wishtaleya a very early and happy birthday!! I won't be around while it's still Tuesday in your corner of the planet, so I wanted to make sure that I don't forget.
