I just went out to lunch and gas went up another 20ยข. It's $2.99 right now. I know you Coastal folk and foreign types are laughing, but that's a pretty big and sudden jump. It was $2.45 just on Sunday. It's only going to get worse while the refineries in the Gulf are down. I'm already spending about $200 a month in gas, just to get back and forth from work. Soon, I'm going to have to get a second job again, just to pay for my gas to my day job. No more road trips anytime soon, that's for sure.
Yes, I know there's people much worse off than I am. But it's my journal, and my whining is allowed. Plus, life still has to go on.
This just sounds awful, from WWL-TV Blog:
12:11 P.M. - Army Corps: Water has become level with the Lake in the city so no more water should flow into the city, except at high tide.
It's good that no more water will be pouring in, but I can't even possibly imagine how much water there already is. It's level with the Lake?!? I know the Lake level went down dramatically, since the water was all pouring out, but that's still alot of water and it's pretty deep. I don't care if I have to ride out on a skateboard. If I'm ever told to evacuate my neighborhood, I'm going. Dying in a cesspool of filth is not for me.
In other news, I got my review at work yesterday, and it was only three weeks late. That's not too bad. It just reinforced the fact that even though many days I sit here and do nothing, my boss still LOVES me. This is not a bad thing. Hopefully, my backpay and raise will be on my next check.

Date: 2005-08-31 05:54 pm (UTC)Momma and I were just saying that if there were ANY kind of evacuation, we would grab all the fuzzies, pack up the car and be gone, gone, gone...
It really amazes me that no one seems to really be doing anything about the gas prices. I mean, not that someone like me could do much, but I know there are people out there who can. People with clout and yet most seemed completely resigned to do nothing. What's up with that?

Date: 2005-08-31 06:06 pm (UTC)I'm not totally surprised that people didn't leave, but it's still rather mystifying. I realize that plenty of people couldn't leave, either because they're incapcitated or don't have the money, but plenty of able people stuck around too.
And the amount of people who left their animals behind to fend for themselves is horrifying! There's so many posts of people wanting to know how they're going to get their cats out. Look, if they haven't drowned, they've already found a way to get out of your building. YOU didn't take care of them, so they're going to have to take care of themselves. I realize there's so exceptions to this, but most people just thought their pets would be okay and left them. I couldn't imagine doing that!
Bush & Co are trying to help with the gas shortages (which is why the price has jumped). They're releasing oil from the reserves, but that takes time to trickle down.

Date: 2005-08-31 06:15 pm (UTC)I heard that there is one politician in the MN House who is setting up an investigation to see why this keeps on happening. I know that I am painfully ignorant about anything involving economics but I just don't understand why it's happening in the first place when there have been other wars and other hard times when giant gas price leaps have not occurred.

Date: 2005-08-31 06:23 pm (UTC)The government HAS to start working on plans for uses of other energy sources, and there are lots of options out there, but Bush & his buddies have hands deep into the pockets of the oil industry and don't want to wreck that business. Nothing will change any time soon.

On the bright side. I think I've got the icon thing covered now.
