leighblack: (Nigel/Jordan - See Right Through Me)
[personal profile] leighblack
Fandom: Crossing Jordan
Word count: 1,144
Pairing: Nigel/Trey, with a side of Jordan
Rating: Slashy, yet totally innocent
Comments: This is my imagining of the events leading up to Trey becoming Nigel's soul mate. I kind of just whipped it up, at Kate's suggestion, and I'm not sure if I like it. Trey's not really around long enough to get a good feeling of his character.
Disclaimer: I don't own 'em. Because this would be canon if I did.

A Night at O’Flannery’s

Nigel sighed heavily and sipped his beer. Jordan had dragged him out to O’Flannery’s after work, even though he had planned to spend the evening at home.

“Nige, you just look so glum lately. You need to have some fun. Let’s go out and have a good time!”

It was never difficult for Jordan to get him to do anything. He had given a half-hearted protest, but ended up following her out. Funny how his idea of a good time greatly differed from reality – which was that he sat at the bar and nursed a beer while Jordan danced the night away, surrounded by a crowd of gorgeous young studs.

He turned on his stool and leaned against the bar while he scanned the crowd of bobbing heads for familiar brunette curls. His brain ran an internal dialogue as he looked around. “No, not the lovely blond guy. Nope, not that redhead. Although, I wish she would dance that close to me. Not the buff bald guy either. Not the…”

His eyes snapped back to the left as he realized he recognized the buff bald man. He got up from his stool in a trance and his feet seemingly moved of their own volition. He edged his way through the crowded dance floor and ended up next to the beautiful black man. Nigel tapped him on the shoulder and shouted his name to be heard above the loud music. “Trey!”

Trey turned around and smiled as he recognized the lanky man. “Nigel!” He grabbed his right hand and shook it as he also clasped him on the shoulder in a gesture of familiarity. “It’s great to see you, man. How are you?”

“What?” Nigel shouted over the thumping bass line.

Trey looked around, then motioned for Nigel to follow him. They ended up at a table in the back of the bar, where it was slightly quieter. They each grabbed a chair and sat facing each other.

“How are…” they began at the same time.

Nigel chuckled. “You first, Trey.” He took a sip of beer and glanced at his companion over the rim of his glass.

“How have you been? Still working for Dr. Macy?”

“Yeah. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to leave that place. I still like it though.”

“That’s cool. Does that Jordan chick still work there? Or has she flown the coop again?”

Nigel realized that he had been gazing at Trey’s lips as he talked and snapped his eyes upwards. “Jordan? Oh, yeah. Jordan. Actually,” he glanced towards the crowd, “she’s around here somewhere.” He turned back towards Trey and realized that he didn’t want to share his attention with the woman in question. “So, how about you? What have you been up to since you left our merry group at the morgue?”

“I’ve been at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. I like it there a lot, but Mass General is trying to get me to move back here and take a chief resident job. I’m down here for the weekend to check it out.”

“You’re been working with live people?” Nigel smirked as he asked the question. “I didn't think they'd trust you to do that. Do you think you’d want to move back down here?”

“I don’t know, man. The money’s good, but I’ve got my family in Baltimore to think about.”

Nigel stopped raising his glass, midway to his lips. “A family? Have you gotten married?”

“No, thank God! But I have a daughter with my ex-girlfriend.” Trey smiled as he reached for his wallet and pulled it out to show off her photo. “Her name is Danica. She’s 1 ½.”

Nigel peered at the photo of the girl. She had an angelic smile, lovely caramel skin and adorable pigtails. “Wow, Trey. She’s beautiful. You’re a lucky man.”

Trey looked at the photo before tucking it away again. “Don’t I know it. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I love her more than anything.”

An uncomfortable silence settled over the table as the two men looked at each other.

“Nigel,” Trey began hesitantly. He was visibly nervous. “Do you ever…think about…you know, that weekend?”

Nigel gave him a coy smile as he asked, “Which weekend would that be, Trey?”

“You know. That weekend. You do remember, don’t you?”

“Do you mean the weekend where we found out the reason you protested so much was because you were firmly stuffed into a closet?” Nigel gave the handsome man a knowing glance. “Oh yes, I remember.”

“Yeah, well. I guess. I just didn’t know. But…I don’t think I ever properly thanked you for that weekend. You showed me a lot of new things. I really, umm, really enjoyed it,” Trey stammered out before glancing off to the side, embarrassed.

Nigel looked across the table in shock. “Really? Well, isn’t that interesting? I’m quite flattered.”

“I was hoping…”

“Nigel!” Nigel turned as he heard his name bellowed across the bar by a husky female voice. “There you are! I’ve been looking all over for you.” Jordan bopped her way over to the table. “Why are you way back here? I need my…” she finally stopped talking as she noticed Nigel’s companion. “Trey?! Is that you?” She laughed and bent over to give him a hug and a kiss on the head. “What are you doing here?”

Trey looked up at the slightly tipsy woman. “I’m here on business for a couple days. I see you’re having a good evening.”

“Yeah! But I needed to find Nigel so I can get my bag.” She peered down at him. “You do still have it, right?”

“Yes, of course, love.” Nigel raised her bag from where he had set it on the floor. “Since I wasn’t dancing, she allowed me the honor of holding her purse,” he explained to Trey, who appropriately chuckled.

“Well, I just thought you should make yourself useful while you were sulking at the bar. But now I need another drink, so I need my money.” She grabbed the bag from Nigel and sauntered off towards the bar.

“I see things haven’t changed since I’ve been gone,” Trey said, as he watched her leave.

“Not really, no. She still commands us all like we’re her personal soldiers.”

They looked at each other across the table and they each noticed the spark of desire in the other’s eyes.

“Listen, Nige. Mass General put me up in The Colonnade for the weekend. I hear there’s a nice lounge there. Would you like to check it out with me? Maybe I can properly thank you for treating me on our ski weekend.”

A slow smile spread across Nigel’s face. “I think I would like that very much.” He made his way to the bar to let Jordan know he was leaving, then followed Trey out the door.

Well, you're welcome. Glad I could cheer you up a little.

That is high praise coming from the queen of the CJ fic. *blushes* Thanks.

It was lovely, it really was.

And I'm no queen. A noble, maybe, but I'm sure there's other queens out there. (Thanks, though. I'm glad you have so much faith in my writing. ^_^)

Really, it's not that good. But I'm glad you like it. Thank you.

Oh, here. It's not a good pic, but all I could find on short notice.

I liked this very much, especially this . . .

“Yeah, well. I guess. I just didn’t know. But…I don’t think I ever properly thanked you for that weekend. You showed me a lot of new things. I really, umm, really enjoyed it,” Trey stammered out before glancing off to the side, embarrassed.

Nigel's so educational *g*. That would have been awesome if he'd been the hinted at soulmate.

I SOOOOOO wanted Trey to be his SM! Just because, yeah...it would be pretty.

Thanks for the compliment! I'm trying to work myself up to writing fic on a slightly regular basis. We'll see how it goes.
