introducing Fred!

My mom called me at work today to ask if I wanted her to bring me lunch (like the answer to that is ever going to be no?) because she had to stop by and pick some things up. And when she got to the store, she was talking to our manager and happened to casually mention that they have a new dog. Ummm, EXCUSE ME? I knew they had been contemplating getting this dog, but the last I'd heard it was still under consideration. But he arrived last night and no one bothered to tell me. Uhhh, thanks?

The dog kind of has a long story. My cousin goes to school in Rapid City and volunteers at a shelter. They found this lab wandering on the street with no collar and no chip. They usually only keep dogs for 5 days but he was so well-behaved and totally trained that they kept him for 10 but no one claimed him. My cousin called my uncle crying about how they were going to put the dog down and he was so good and couldn't they keep him? Except that they already have two of her dogs there. But my uncle said he'd arrange something and she brought the dog home at Thanksgiving. One of the family friends took him as a hunting dog. Except the poor thing is HORRIBLY gun shy, as they found out. So my uncle took him back and was contemplating keeping him but their little rat dog was already very territorial after the new puppy they got a few months ago. My uncle begged my mom to take him and my parents were going to think about it. Of course, my dad loved him immediately and now the dog's name is Fred. idek

Introducing Fred
it's very hard to keep him still

Fred

Fred

Fred can reach the table very well
the 'rents are not exactly used to having dogs that can reach the table

Earl is clearly dubious about the situation
Earl is clearly dubious about the entire thing

He really is very sweet and well trained. Except that he barks a lot for attention and that's going to have to stop. They think he's around 1 1/2 or 2, so he's still a bit of a puppy. Hopefully he'll mellow out a little bit. My mom says this is just a trial period, but I'm pretty sure the dog is here to stay. So yay! New doggie!

heh. I like that you can see McCoy doing the sarcastic clapping in this mood gif!

Wow, he is gorgeous and adorable!

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
He's definitely very easy to love!

[identity profile] foxontherun.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
He is a handsome boy! Sorry you found out in such an awkward way about him, though. Also, I cannot stop laughing at the picture of Earl. It's so cute.

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
I was all 'you didn't tell me you got the dog?!? That didn't seem to be an important piece of information??'

Earl is not impressed with the dog. At all.

[identity profile] annayork.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Aww! Congrats! He looks like such a sweetie, and he has that "I got it good now!" happy-puppy smile!

I LOVE Earl's expression! He's probably going "What did you DO to me?" but in a few weeks I bet they'll be inseparable!

My folks did the same thing about Louie. They were thinking of getting another dog and one day called and asked what I thought- I wasn't sure how Newman would react to the new puppy. Then said "Oh, well we got one! Merry Christmas!" (they used my Christmas money to get him LOL!) One of the best Christmas gifts ever, though!

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't know. Earl really isn't doing well enough to bond with the new dog. But stranger things have happened.

[identity profile] annayork.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
It took Louie about 2-3 weeks to warm up to Baby Joe so it will be a long process. Once Earl realizes Fred = more attention for him, he should be OK.

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
They had Annie for about six months and Earl managed to ignore her for the entire time, so I'm not entirely sure about that. He's pretty stubborn.

[identity profile] praguematic.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
That picture of Earl is the best thing ever

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
He is so NOT amused.

[identity profile] taylorea.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahahahahaahahahaahahahahahaahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Earl is actually sneering! Oh, poor baby! (Not at all)

Fred is adroreable. I guess after hearing the story I would cave too. How cute! I can't wait to meet that sweet face. :-D

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think Earl was actually mid-licking-his-beard, but the appearance of sneering is not off the mark.

You know you're welcome over any time!

[identity profile] daedalsobriquet.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
a) that dog looks so excited to be there. like happy to be in the house, happy to be a dog. he just looks so happy!
b) dubious is the perfect adjective for that pic!
c) my grammy forgets to tell me major stuff like that too. she'll tell me all the bad news for months and then casually in passing reference some huge happy news about my mom and hi no one bothered to tell me. and they're all "oh we thot we already told you" AUGH.
d) :)

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
He seems pretty happy. I was sitting on the floor and he kept trying to climb into my lap. Not such an easy feat with a 70 lb dog. He settled for belly rubs.

[identity profile] dazeebean.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
OMG he's gorgeous, what a cutie!!!

Poor Earl, yet another new thing...:\

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Earl is clearly not amused. Especially since Fred invades his space under the kitchen table.

[identity profile] eagle-of-idiocy.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, doggie! :D He's adorable!

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
He is!

[identity profile] geneli4.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
hi fred hi!

but poor earl. he is not amused!

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Not amused at all. Poor guy.

[identity profile] duckduck.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
He's super duper cute. What a lover, you can tell he's just so friendly. But what I love more than anything is Earl's little face. He is NOT HAVING IT.

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
As soon as I walked in the door and sat down on the floor to say hi to Earl, Fred tried to climb into my lap. So yeah, FRIENDLY.

Earl is so very not amused. Poor thing.

[identity profile] cahill42.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, what a cutie! Rescues (and he qualifies) can be difficult to deal with even when they are trained and docile. Being bounced around and apparently abandoned by his former owners can cause some emotional neediness, hence the barking. Lots of love and care can help with that. He's also a lab, and they tend to be a bit excitable. :)

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, of course. I'm sure he's gotten used to barking for attention because he was either not getting any while wandering the streets or competing with other dogs in the shelter. Plus he has a lot of energy and I'm sure it's hard to be cooped up in the house, even though he can go out into the yard through the doggie door. It's cold out there! He'll mellow some once he gets used to things, I'm sure. =)

[identity profile] dragonsinger.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww...he's beautiful.

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] leighblack.livejournal.com 2009-12-16 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Earl is not so cute. But my mom will appreciate that people say he is. ;)
