Debauchery in Hollywood, Day 1 - Video Star at the Key Club
Thursday, June 2nd, 2005
The day started out kind of bad. I had gotten all packed and ready the night before. In fact, I was done earlier than I had expected, so I picked up Confessions of a Lingerie Addict by Jennifer Ashley and figured I'd read until I got tired. Which didn't really happen. I don't know if it was because the book was so good or I was so excited for my trip, but I couldn't settle down and ended up reading the entire book. That led to getting about an hour or so of sleep before my alarm went off in the morning. Not a real good way to start out a trip, but no big deal. I figured I'd just sleep on the plane instead.
My mom ferried me to the airport around 8 am and I was on my way. On my way to a lot of sitting on my ass, that is. Usually I would be sure to get a direct flight to LA. But since I wanted to fly into the Burbank airport to make things 100% easier for
vampirecarly, it wasn't going to happen. Instead, I had the pleasure of flying through Dallas, which ended up tacking about 2 1/2 hours onto my trip out. What are you gonna do? I finally got on the plane and crashed out for most of the flight down.
That Dallas airport is nuts! Thankfully, I didn't have to transfer planes. I just got off to walk around a little. There were tons of yummy soldiers walking around in uniform. That made people watching fun. I got back on the plane and managed to stay awake for most of the flight. There were hardly any clouds, so I was able to enjoy the scenery. I love flying over the mountains!
I walked off the plane, went to the baggage carousel and immediately ran into someone I knew. That has to be a new record for me! It was Christian from Killingbird, who was apparently picking up his g/f. I decided not to bother him, since I didn't want to interrupt their conversation. I grabbed my bag and located Carly outside the airport. And I finally got to see Dorian! Oh my goodness!! What a cutie! I think we know who's side of the gene pool he got the adorableness from. ;) Carly's going to have her hands full with him 'cause he is a charmer. We picked up Mina from school, hung out around the house for a while, ran to the grocery store and did generally domestic things.
I was really exhausted from my long day, but determined to make a go at having a great time that night. Carly had been planning for us to see Video Star at the Key Club and I was excited to see them. They're a band of mock stars (I've never heard a better term than that!) that plays 80's New Wave covers, along with some fine comedy bits. I was going to wear a horrible 80's throw back snake skin print skirt, but decided for a more comfortable look instead.
Our voyage to Hollywood started with a trip to Wanda's apartment. What a wonderful place she has! It's a really beautiful, big apartment smack in the middle of Hollywood, with a gorgeous view of the Hills. I was very jealous. Plus, Wanda was very cool. We hung out there for a little while then continued on our way. We stopped and picked up
xfsista (Julie), and I also met
punishingkiss (Lori) while we were there. Carly enjoyed a straight shot of pre-drinking vodka and we were finally off to the Key Club.
(A side note: it turns out
wonderfungus was a block down at the Carbon Leaf show at The Roxy and I didn't know it! It's so sad we missed each other.)
Thanks to Carly's magic, she & I were hooked up for the show. We met up with
daedalsobriquet (Shirily), avoided the really bad band playing before Video Star and then made our way into the quite crammed basement...errrrr, Plush Lounge. There's a nice padded bench at the front of the stage and that's where we plopped down for the night. I was very happy I didn't wear my tight short skirt, because there would have been issues.
How do you describe Video Star?? Well, this recent article in the L.A. Times did a pretty good job. The band itself sounded really great! I thought they did a really good job. They need a little more work on their comedy bits, but they'll get there. Although I totally busted out laughing when Roland brought out the AquaNet and touched up everyone's hair.

They played SO many great songs! My favorite though, was probably "Goody Two Shoes," because it's impossible not to enjoy that song. The crowd was nuts! Like a zillion girls, many dressed up in 80's getup, were dancing and singing and generally enjoying themselves. Carly & I did a lot of couch dancing on our plush bench. We also worked on choking down the strongest drinks I've ever had. Sure, you want your drink to be strong, but these were too much. We had to wait for the ice to melt before we could even try sipping them.
Girls kept jumping onstage to dance with the band. One of them had the most hideous boots on - bright white with silver chains hanging all over them. This rather weird drunk guy kept walking up and commandering the mic. But that was cool because the look on Roland's face was priceless! They also invited an Axl Rose look-a-like, whom we all thought we recognized, up to sing "Sweet Child O'Mine." He did a pretty good job.

After the show, we hung around in the basem...lounge for a while and listened to the rad tunes Jamie was spinning. Carly protested the Belinda Carlisle, yet still knew all the words. Shirily's friend Gabe, who was wearing a fab "WINGMAN" T-shirt, made me feel old as he kept asking about the music that was on. Matt finally came out so Carly could say hello, then we danced out of the lounge as "Gloria" was playing.
Not wanting the night to end, we stood outside Key Club for a while and jabbered on. I was so exhausted at that point I was wide awake, so I was cool with doing whatever. Suddenly, attention was directed across the street as someone asked "Is that Matt?" And yes indeed, it was Matt, still dressed in his Vyvyan outfit, complete with bondage pants, walking his floofy white dog and carrying a plastic pooper scooper bag. I WISH we had taken a covert picture or two, because that was a FABOO image. We booked it across Sunset so we could talk to Matt and meet the floofy dog, who's name was Clancy. Clancy turned out to be rather anti-social, and Matt kind of hurried off after stopping for a moment.
We, however, did not hurry off. Instead, we stood outside that building on Sunset, for what had to be nearly 2 hours. Just talking and goofing off and whatnot. You see a lot of strange people on Sunset Blvd. at that time of night. Including Matt, who I think we really scared as we were STILL standind there when he returned from his walk. And the drunk guy who was talking to himself and carrying about 50 spank mags. Because we attract freaks, he of course came over to talk. Carly didn't help any as she was just encouraging his craziness. Other entertaining things happened, but I was really tired, so it's kind of a blur. Much laughing and happiness abounded, especially after "queer is the new black" was coined. Finally, after they turned off the video tron on top of the Key Club, we decided to call it a night.
We dropped Julie off then went in search of drunk food, but Jack In the Box was closed! Oh no! Instead, we had to run to a very scary Carl Jr.'s, where I watched someone put my burger together without wearing gloves. We finally got home around 3am, pigged out and crashed hard.
